A brief history of my musical career and the people who have played a major role in my development as both a performer and a teacher.
After hearing Tania Maria Correa Reis' "Sangría" off her "Come with me" album at a tender age of 18, I immediately fell in love with Latin Music and percussion. A couple of years later, having failed to save enough money to buy conga drums, I just went into debt and bought some anyway. I was 21 and finishing a university degree in Science. Although I had been playing African Bongo drums since I was 8, it was Neville Murray of Jah Wobble fame who first taught me technique in playing and I will be forever indebted to him for those crucial first few workshops. I also met a life long soul mate Gareth Stevens. At this time I learnt all the basics in Mambo, Salsa, Samba, Merengue and a host over other tropical rhythms. Neville also gave me my first insights in how to run a workshop.
When I graduated from university in 1986, I joined my first rock, soul band "Mood Index" with college friends, and hit the local Brighton scene. Despite the average age of the band exceeding 35 years old, we were runners up in a Rock contest for national youth clubs of the UK, failing at the last hurdle only because the celebrity judge Andy Summers hated our band with a passion. Oh well! But we did get to play at Ronnie Scotts Club, albeit on a Sunday afternoon.
However, I also had my eye on a great local band called Cha Cha Bar and was lucky enough to join the gang in 1987 for a taste of Perez Prado Mambo, Xavier Cugat Cha Cha Cha, and then moving onto 60's Puerto Rican Boogaloo. The jazzers amongst us mixed in our Jazz influences and Cha Cha Bar moved into a Latin Jazz format, slimed down from a 14 piece orchestra to a 7 piece combo and we decided to go out and get paid as professionals. So began my professional career. It meant also that we were able to pay for real brass players, like Raul D'Oliveira (Elton John, Pet Shop Boys, Wham...)
At this time, I was running percussion workshops in London with Community Music. I had learnt about the organisation through Neville Murray and signed up for a year part time training course in 1988. They trained me and gave me ample opportunity to run my own workshops to wide ranging audiences. I worked with Primary School children, teenagers in youth clubs, Special Needs drop in Centres, in fact where ever there was a need for music provision in the community. This was to provide me with a wide base of core skills thus preparing me to run my own workshops in Brighton through Brighton Jazz club in 1988 an 1989. I also joined a performing arts organization in Brighton called Same Sky, and was involved in yet more outreach music workshops to communities across the South Coast. It is worth mentioning the free jazz drummer John Stevens, who had been a major influence on many of us at that time. His book and methodology "Search and Reflect" was central to our training. He had developed a series of activities that covered a wide range of skills to develop rhythm, harmony, musical awareness and self esteem, applicable to groups of any size and all abilities. The results were astonishing, and the techniques simple and easy for us to employ. His work continues to influence music instructors today some 10 years after his death. Personally I believe that it shaped my whole awareness of music playing, listening and teaching. John Stephens taught me to listen to the sound of a pin drop in the middle of a rock concert!
Meanwhile, Cha Cha Bar continued to evolve and finally received a little exposure in the emerging Acid Jazz scene in London, especially at Dingwalls in Camden Lock. Cha Cha Bar promptly folded because we all became absorbed into the London Jazz and Salsa scene with prominent bands. Some went to Robin Jones' King Salsa. I went with my mate Gareth Stevens to play in Snowboy's Latin Descarga as a founding member, accompanied by accomplished players Chris Kibble on piano, Andy Lafont on bass, Gary Plumley - a tenor sax heavy weight and of course the three percussionists, myself, Gareth and Snowboy on Bongos, Congas and Timbales. It was about 1989 and the Acid Jazz hype was taking off. We fast became THE Latin Jazz band in London and played all over the UK. Our second gig was the Town and Country club in front of a couple of thousand afficianados. My best gig was in the African Centre in London. We played hard, punky acid Latin, and the audience loved it. My playing took a giant leap forward, in the presence of such great musicians. The band continues today although I left in the early years to study a master's degree in 1990.
In the same period (1988), I had a brief stint playing with Nitin Sawhney in a wonderful but short lived venture called "the Jazz Tones". We were all sad to loose the band because we made a beautiful sound, but it lost money on every gig. The playing standard was high and we received high acclaim amongst the few who saw us. Nitin went into debt and dissolved the band, years later to begin a successful solo career including numerous albums and some film scores and exposure on Channel 4 and the South Bank Show.
After returning to Brighton in 1991, I became a founding member of Terry Seabrook's Cubana Bop. The band have had some success in the Jazz circuit and recorded a CD some years later.
In 1994 I moved to Ecuador and took temporary retirement from music for nearly two years. Frustrated by lack of musical ability in the town where I was living, I preferred not to play at all. And then one day, that special day they passed my way, Alejandro Gutierrez and Vanito Caballero walked into town with their Cuban Rockason, and so started a beautiful relationship. We played regularly as a trio, two guitars, vocals and myself on the percussion. We played Cuban Son, or was it rock? Whatever it was, it was some of the best music I'd ever heard. We just loved playing together. We were even taken to the Galapagos Islands to play in a local club in Puerto Ayora on the Island of Santa Cruz for a three week residency. Alejandro and Vanito are gifted singer song writers, at last receiving acclaim in their previously rock phobic native Cuba. They are now part of the Cuban Habana Abierta project, based in Madrid and Barcelona, in the company of acclaimed Cuban singer/song writers like Gema and Pavel, Raul Torres amongst others. So began my initiation of playing Cuban music with the people who play it best. The Cubans.
A year later, in 1997, I finally spent a month in Habana and studied Batá drums with Afro Cuba and Congas with "el Papiosco", percussionist with a local salsa orchestra Grupo Klimax. That sorted out a lot of my technique and eradicated a few misconceptions that I still had from my schooling in London. Putting all that knowledge into practice was to follow shortly.
On moving to Quito, I was always a guest at the Bodeguito Cubano restaurant and would frequently sit in with the resident Cuban Band. That was enough to get me known and within weeks I joined a Cuban Son/Salsa Combo called Mojito Cubano. We played Salsa dance music. Lack of money meant we were only five, so each of us had to pretend to be two musicians to make it sound more like an orchestra. Mojito put some finishing touches on my playing and musicianship. In that band, there was no room for error. It was all arranged and you had to get it right or the public might notice and stop dancing. Yuri sang without so much as pausing for a breath, and when he did stop singing, it was to put the alto to his lips to play the melody line. And dancing at the same time. And if he didn't have the sax in his hand, out came the guiro. I played bongos and added an extra beat to the cowbell to make it sound like there were two cowbells playing simultaneously. The band eventually folded, Yuri went back to Cuba to play with Paulito and his Elite in Habana and the bass player Ricardo Muñoz, went on tour with non other than Buena Vista Social Club.
The next project was to fulfill a long term dream rather than making any economical sense. Fortune had it that a neighbour called Vilmedis, was a dancer and percussionist, and wanted to play Batá drums. I wanted the same but loved the songs of these beautiful and ancient Nigerian- Cuban tradition. Fortune also had it that we had a Cuban Santería priest and Salsa singer in town, and so our spiritual Godfather Israel, joined us and we spent the next eight months teaching ourselves the rhythms and chants for Eleggua, Yemaya, Changó and Obbatala.
I am now back in the UK and am currently forming a new group in the Lancaster region with local musicians Sam Dale and Lawrence Woof. We played a brief concert as a trio in the 2004 Lancaster Jazz festival and a new band was formed. Details to be announced shortly, but the music is to be a Latin-Soul-Jazz-Groove dance band. We hope to incorporate bass guitar, keyboards and brass. Watch this space.
